When Should You Book Newborn Photos? A Guide for Baton Rouge & Central Louisiana Families
If you're expecting a little one, congratulations! There is so much to plan and prepare for before your baby's arrival, and newborn photography is one of those things that can easily get pushed to the bottom of the list.
But those first few weeks with your baby truly fly by.
One minute you're waiting to meet your little one, and the next you're wondering how they could possibly have already changed so much.
As a newborn photographer serving Central, Louisiana and the Baton Rouge area, one of the questions I hear most often is:
"When should I book my newborn photography session?"
My answer is simple: the earlier, the better!
When Should You Book Your Newborn Photos?
I recommend booking your newborn photography session during your second trimester, ideally around 20–30 weeks of pregnancy.
You don't need to know your baby's exact birth date yet. When you book, we will choose a tentative session date based on your due date. Once your sweet baby arrives, we'll adjust the date if needed.
Booking during pregnancy allows you to reserve your spot on my calendar before your baby arrives.
And trust me—once baby is here, life gets wonderfully busy!
Between feedings, diapers, snuggles, and very little sleep, the last thing you want to worry about is finding a newborn photographer at the last minute.
What If I'm Already Due—or My Baby Has Already Arrived?
Don't panic!
If you are already pregnant and haven't booked your newborn photos, or you've recently welcomed your baby and are thinking, "Oh no, I forgot to schedule newborn pictures!"—reach out anyway.
I occasionally have availability for last-minute newborn sessions, depending on my calendar.
And while I typically photograph newborns during those early sleepy weeks, there is no "bad" time to document your baby.
Every stage is worth remembering.
When Is the Best Age for Newborn Pictures?
For my traditional newborn sessions, I generally recommend photographing your baby within the first 12 days after birth.
During this stage, babies are often sleepier and more naturally curl into those sweet newborn poses.
Their tiny details are changing so quickly—the little wrinkles, flaky skin, button nose, tiny fingers, and those impossibly tiny toes.
Those are the details you'll want to remember.
Of course, every baby is different. Some babies are sleepy little snuggle bugs, while others have already decided they have places to go and people to see!
That's perfectly okay.
My goal isn't to force your baby into a pose. It's to create beautiful, timeless photographs while keeping your baby's comfort and safety first.
What If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?
You should still book the session!
There is no magical expiration date on newborn photographs.
Older babies may be more alert and awake, which can give us beautiful images of their eyes and personality. We can also focus on sweet details, cuddly family photographs, and natural moments with Mom and Dad.
Your baby doesn't have to be a certain age for their story to be worth documenting.
Why Should You Book Before Your Baby Arrives?
One of my favorite things about booking newborn photography before your baby arrives is that you don't have to think about it after delivery.
Your due date gives us a starting point, and once your baby arrives, we'll communicate and choose the best session date.
This also gives us plenty of time to prepare for your session and make sure everything is ready for your little one's arrival.
Most importantly, it gives you one less thing to worry about during those first precious days at home.
What Should You Expect During a Newborn Photography Session?
My newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed and baby-led.
There is no need to rush.
We allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, diaper changes, soothing, and all the little pauses that come with photographing a newborn.
Your baby sets the pace.
I'll guide you through the session and create a collection of timeless portraits that capture those tiny details you'll never want to forget.
And yes—there will absolutely be plenty of opportunities for Mom and Dad to get in the photographs, too.
Because years from now, you won't just want to remember what your baby looked like.
You'll want to remember how tiny they were in your arms.
